The JCCEO Blanket Project began in early 2007 with the former Executive Director's personal purchase of 19 blankets, gifted to senior contending with unheated homes and the lack of proper bedding. Inspired by Ms. Willie Mae Porter (a Meals on Wheels worker and advocate for seniors), whom she met in the corridors the the Alabama Capitol, the Executive Director was motivated to assist low-income seniors in Jefferson County in yet another meaningful way.
Fast forward five years and the JCCEO Blanket Project has ballooned to a sizable undertaking! Thanks to President Obama, the US Congress, and JC Penney's, JCCEO purchased full and queen-sized plush blankets with CSBG-ARRA funds at a discounted price from JC Penney's. Over 400 blankets to date have been distributed, in the "heat" of winter, to our eligible seniors.
